homemade hummus

Making Homemade Hummus

Last night I made homemade hummus and it was delicious. My only complaint with this recipe is that it makes so much! I got the recipe from my VitaMix cookbook but I modified it a little. Ingredients: Chickpeas (aka Garbonzo beans) two 15 ounce cans (one drained, one with liquid) Olive Oil - 1 and 1/4 Tablespoons Lemon Juice - 1/4 Cup of lemon juice Tahini (or sesame seeds) - 2 Tablespoons of Tahini or 1/4 Cup of sesame seeds Cumin - 1 teaspoon Garlic - one clove peeled and mashed Put it all in a blender. Turn on the power. I used the frozen dessert setting for about 2 minutes. It gets whipped into a very creamy texture. So delicious!...

Renaming the Dreadmill

Renaming the Dreadmill or How to Change Your Attittude

While scrolling through Facebook recently, I noticed someone asking now that it was winter, how could she learn to like running on the dreadmill? Someone replied that the first step was to quit calling it a dreadmill because using negative words reinforces negativity. I said, yes, absolutely this. Renaming the Dreadmill It’s definitely easy to fall into saying negative things. I realized recently that I was constantly muttering “oh, I hate this” when I was at my boot camp class. I think that’s probably not what I should be saying. Perhaps I can say, “This is hard but I can do it.”  Or maybe I should just say, “oh I love this!” People will think I’m crazy if I’m doing burpees but that’s ok. Do we have to...

Making 2020 Commitments

Making 2020 Commitments

I'm starting this year by making 2020 commitments. I guess it is kinda like resolutions, but I'm following Jill's lead of selecting 3 words for the new year. Before I jump into 2020, a quick summary of 2019. Last year was okay when it comes to work outs, but not great. The hardest part was no running, but I had made that commitment to myself. Honestly I really miss it and may do a bit of it in 2020, but it won't be a major focus. My daily calorie burn in 2019 was an average of 25 calories less than in 2018 (according to my FitBit.) It's not that I didn't get enough exercise, I actually spent more active time, it's just I didn't run and I...

My Three Words for 2020

My Three Words for 2020

Instead of a New Year’s resolution, I am practicing  “My 3 Words for 2020.” The idea is that you think up three words that will help guide your choices and actions over the coming year. Several years ago, both Chris and I followed Chris Brogan’s My Three Words exercise for the new year. I actually found it helpful but as things happen, I quit doing it for a while. After doing the three words exercise for a couple years, I moved to creating My Three Goals. This became much more like creating resolutions and my goals, to be honest, were contradictory. I basically wanted to lose fat at the same time as I wanted to gain muscle and increase my running speed. I must have just watched...

Ten Tips for Using Your Treadmill

Ten Tips for Using Your Treadmill

Whether you use a treadmill at home or if you use one at your gym, it’s good to think about the best ways for using your treadmill. I've come up with ten tips for using your treadmill. I like my treadmill and I like using the treadmill at times at the gym. It’s a great way to get some cardio in. I also like to use the treadmill to work on speed over the winter months. Once summer begins to wind down, I begin to think about the treadmill. I have had a couple injuries due to falling off a treadmill. It sounds funny to think of someone falling off a treadmill and it’s a common gag video on YouTube. Trust me, it’s not funny if it...

Health benefits of kombucha

Health Benefits of Kombucha

Have you ever tried Kombucha? Jill introduced me to this type of fermented tea. One day when I went to her place for recording an intro for a podcast she asked me if I'd like one. Honestly I had never tried it before and had a very vague idea of what it is. I've heard it has a "mother", which sounds like making yogurt to me. And I'd also heard about Scoby, but I had no idea about it. (SCOBY is actually an acronym: Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast.) Sounds delicious, right? The flavor is tart and oddly yummy. I found that I really love it on a hot day or when I've been exercising and am thirsty. It really quenches my thirst like most drinks don't....

happy healthy holiday

Happy Healthy Holiday

Let me wish you a happy healthy holiday! Here it is, the end of 2019 and we’re in the midst of holiday fervor. I hope you’re enjoying time with family and friends and reaping the benefits of your year-long efforts to be fit and strong. We are having a different kind of Christmas this year and I am getting to see my sister, nephew, and two grand nieces, as well as my parents, brother, and son and his fiancée. I don’t often spend the holidays with all of them so it’s a treat. This year has been a challenge for me, health-wise. I didn’t realize until this December just how much pain and discomfort I’ve been in. I’ll save that discussion for the Fit Strong Women Over 50...

veggue fritta

Veggie Fritta or Omelet?

It started out that I was making an omelet for my husband and myself, but after I had all these veggies in the pan, I switched it up to a veggie fritta. It was too big to try to flip! The only real difference is you don't flip it. You cook the fritta from the bottom and the top - Usually by putting it into the oven to brown the veggies and the top. Cheese is usually in these omelets or fritta, but we were out and honestly, I don't think either of us missed it. This was filled with peppers, onions, broccoli, tomato, celery, mushrooms and spinach - nothing extremely "new" - but I'm still going to call it my #veggiechallenge for the week!
