Return to Yoga

Return to Yoga

FI’ve been talking about my need to return to yoga for quite a while. I practiced yoga off and on for but due to the combination of not really liking the yoga classes offered at my gym and then the whole social distancing thing made it difficult. Finally, I tried a new yoga studio this week. I received a gift certificate for Christmas with five passes for classes at a nearby studio.  Figuring it was time, I took my first class this week. I signed up for a gentle yoga because I find starting back into anything is easier if you just take it easy at first. Signing up for the flow class seemed a bit much for starting over. I loved it! The class was enjoyable,...

Avocado the healthy fat

Avocado the Healthy Fat

Avocados are considered a healthy fat. I think of them as a vegetable when I'm cooking, but technically they are a fruit with their seed in the middle. I've also read that they are related to berries, because they grow on trees and have the flesh around a single seed. As a child and young adult, I never ate avocados. I don't even remember seeing them in the store when I was young. But at that point in my life, I probably ate the same things, maybe on only about 8 or 10 different vegetables each week. Certainly not eating a variety of 30 different plant-based foods each week (including vegetables, fruits, seeds and nuts.) I love eating avocados and they keep me full for a long...

Active Elderly Woman

What Do You Call an Active Elderly Woman?

I was talking to a 78 year old woman in the gym the other day about what to call an active elderly woman. She's at the gym almost every weekday for several hours at a time. She works out in the gym and spends time in the pool. She does a lot of treading of water. If there was an Olympic competition in water treading, I think she could win it. She has unbelievable biceps for any woman. I told her that I am taking a class at the local university and called myself old. She said that I was not allowed to call myself old in front of her. I explained that I meant it in reference to the college-aged students in my class. She told...

dark chocolate

Dark Chocolate

Many of us have heard about the health benefits of dark chocolate. Dark chocolate with 70% or more cacao solids has many vitamins and minerals, such as iron, magnesium, zinc, copper and phosphorus as well as antioxidants. I try to only eat it during the day, as it also has some caffeine in it which interferes with my sleep. Unfortunately recent findings of a Consumer Report study has been in the news about high levels of heavy metals in several brands of dark chocolate including Trader Joe's, Green & Black's, Theo and Lily's (from Hershey.) The news of this report was dated December 15, just in time for Christmas gifts. Of course, I received two nice big bars of dark chocolate in my stocking. The same article said that...

Christmas Fitness Gifts

Christmas Fitness Gifts

It’s a few days after Christmas and I’m enjoying my fitness gifts. This year I received personal training sessions and some passes to a new (to me) yoga studio in the area. Isn’t that a great way to go into the new year? Chris and I discussed what we want to accomplish in 2023 in our recent podcast so perhaps these Christmas fitness gifts will help out. Yoga I’m excited about the yoga classes because the studio appears to have a wide range of classes. I used to only want advanced yoga but these days I’m happy to indulge in some gentle yoga or restorative yoga. I can’t wait to sample a bit of both types. A bit more strenuous and a bit less. Sounds ideal. I also...

Some of the topics we discussed include: Eating fiber first, then protein, then carbs. So eating your salad or vegetables first makes sense, then the protein, and then whatever carbs you’re eating. [caption id="attachment_6231" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Glucose Revolution by Jessie Inchauspe[/caption] Jill recently read the book "Glucose Revolution by Jessie Inchauspe" and we talked about some insights that she learned from it. Water? Before after during? Drinking water before a meal might help you eat less. I’ve read that drinking during or after a meal does...
