Keeping a Fitness Mindset

October is a month that I traditionally have a tough time keeping a fitness mindset. In years past, at the end of September, I participated in the Akron Marathon in a relay team or by running the half (2015 & 16 the team; 2017 & 2018 the half.) After that goal was achieved and October arrived, I was always felt a let down from goal achievement and a bit like taking a break. I haven't done a running race since the 2018 half, but still find that October's weather tends to make me feel like staying inside and less like enjoying outdoor fitness activities. Having Peanut (my dog) really helps me to get out and walk. This weekend I was looking forward to the color changes...

Getting Steps in Autumn

One of my goals this time of year is to be outside and enjoy nature. I find that it's easy to get plenty of steps walking in nature and it's easy to get the steps when you're not thinking about it. Lately I've done some hiking and talking with friends. It's always a pleasure to walk and talk. It's also one of the prettiest times in nature here in Northeast Ohio -- Fall! I was lucky to be out in sunny warm weather and still get to see trees just beginning to change. One of my walks was at Hudson Springs Park, not too far from where I live. Jill and I took a short walk around Hudson Springs Lake with our dogs, Penny and Peanut....

Fall: My Favorite Fitness Season

Fall: My Favorite Fitness Season

I didn’t realize that fall is my favorite fitness season until I sat down to write a blog post. I thought, I’ll write about how the fall season is a great time to change up my fitness plans. When I did a search for other blog posts I might have written, I found these posts: 2018 Ten Tips for Fall Fitness 2019 End of Summer 2020 The Fun of Fall Biking 2021 Running in the Fall with My Dog Apparently last year (2022) I was more focused on food than on fitness because I wrote about roasting pumpkin seeds in the air fryer.  This is a good reminder that I should get a pumpkin to carve this year. In 2017, which I believe was the year Chris and I started the...

A walk in the park

It was a Beautiful Day for a Walk in the Park

Jill and I took a walk in a nearby park yesterday morning. It was great opportunity to be able to spend some time together, catch up on things and discuss ideas for future topics and podcast guests for our Fit Strong Women Over 50 podcast. The weather was cooler than it had been lately, only around 78 degrees compared to over 90 degrees several times this past week. A nice breeze was blowing and the sun was shining! Penny and Peanut, our dogs, also enjoyed getting out and smelling the fresh air. A few weeks ago a wild windstorm came through and pushed down quite a few trees along the path in the park. We both were surprised how much damage there was and also how quickly...

Deirdre Hewitson is a freelance photographer, editor, and writer who lives in Cape Town, South Africa. We learned about her because one of our Becoming Elli members (who lives in Norway) posted that Deidre is her hero. Over the years. Deirdre has taken up scuba diving, bicycle racing, water skiing, paragliding, white water rafting, and running. Now, at 61, and about ten marathons later, she has added trail running, climbing, hiking and yoga to the mix of regular activities. "Say yes more often...

Enjoying the Trails with Our Dogs

Last weekend Jill and I enjoyed the trails with our dogs when we got our two dogs together to meet and hike for the first time. Jill's dog Penny is just over a year old and still a youngster. Peanut turned 9 years old in March. Both dogs are females. I was very happy that they got along very well. Actually after the initial hello, they basically ignored each other and were much more interested in sniffing the grass and looking at all the geese, other hikers and other dogs. We hiked the trail at Hudson Spring Park which features some open areas but mostly shade as it circles Hudson Springs Lake. It was mid-afternoon so the weather was still pretty hot, even in the shade,...

Peanut: My New Dog = More Steps

Having a dog in my life definitely adds more steps to my day! I find that I am more motivated to take longer walks as well as getting outside for a short walk during the day. Welcome to Peanut, a 9-year-old Shibu Inu mix. She's my granddog. Her full name is Princess Peanut Brittle and she is living with my husband and myself after a couple of minor incidents when my grandson was playing with her dog toys. While she is a lovely sweet dog, she really can't be trusted with a baby who crawls and grabs dog toys and fur. All of us agreed that we didn't want any major incidents! Springtime Hiking

Springtime Hiking

Don't you love springtime hiking? It makes life feel glorious, don't you think? It's spring here in Ohio and flowers are beginning to bloom. Trees have blossoms on them but there's still a look of winter because the trees don't have leaves on them yet. I've gotten out to local parks and hiked trails that I haven't been on in quite a while. Some are actually brand new to me. In the photo above, I hiked a new trail (to  me, that is) with my son. It is part of the Edgewater Beach park in Cleveland. Because of the Covid-19 shutdowns last year, I ended up not hiking much any time of the year because the parks were so crowded with people who couldn't go shopping or dining...

hiking through the woods

Hiking through the Woods Mindfully

Hiking through the woods is an enjoyable way to spend a spring afternoon. Yesterday was one of those special spring hikes. I tried to stay in the moment and had a good time checking out all the signs of spring. It felt almost like a scavenger hunt: Moss, check. Mud, check. Ferns, mushrooms, ravine. Check, check, check. Hiking in the woods definitely reminds me of when I was a kid because when I was young, this was a constant activity in the spring. I didn't get a photo of the deer that I saw. In fact, I didn't even think of it, just enjoyed the moment. It felt really good to be out in the sun crunching over hills and along the trail. Social distancing is easy...

Meeting new challenges zip lining in Utah

Taking on Some New Challenges

I consider a big part of Becoming Elli to be taking on new challenges. Some are physical, some are mental. Some, like the veggie challenge, are habits. As some of you know, I live in Summit County, Ohio, USA. By the name of it, you might think we are located on the top of a mountain, but in my county, the elevation peaks at just over 1,000 feet (325m) from sea level. So when I had the opportunity last weekend to visit Utah and do some outdoor activities, I figured the higher elevation of around 7,000 feet above sea level would give me some challenge. And it did! But it was the mental challenges that really gave me a bit of a work out! Glad I've been...
