Ending the Year with a Goal

Ending the Year with a Goal

Here it is, early December of 2023, and I’m thinking about ending the year with a goal. People usually focus on setting goals for the new year and I’m sure I’ll do that too but I thought it would be best to set a goal for the end of the year. That way I can end the year strong and move into the new year feeling like I can do more. I signed up for a local 5K being held in the afternoon of New Year’s Eve day, i.e., December 31. I haven’t run a race since the Towpath half marathon I ran in October 2021. That’s over two years ago, which seems like a really long time. We were still following pandemic protocols so the race...

Building Strength at the Gym

Building Strength at the Gym

I think it’s time for an update on how I’m doing building strength at the gym. In early September, I resumed going to my gym. I wrote a post about deciding to return to my gym and what I was doing. It’s now early November so a two month check in is a good idea, I think. I’ve been working with a trainer twice a week. I decided that it was worth it to me to spend the money on personal training because it forces me to actually go and do a full workout. I know that when I’m left to  my own resources, I tend to think, “oh that’s good enough” and don’t do the extra set or knock off before doing all of the...

Eggs are a delicious, nutritious meal - carton

Eggs – a Delicious, Nutritious Powerhouse Meal

I must say that one of my favorite foods is eggs. They are delicious, nutritious and versatile! For many people, eggs are a favorite type of breakfast. I like my eggs scrambled, poached, fried, and boiled. Other than making some cereal or toast, eggs was one of the first foods I ever learned to cook*. Not only are eggs delicious and easy-to-prepare, they also offer a lot of health benefits. Eggs are packed with protein. A single large egg contains about 6 grams of protein, making it one of the most protein-dense foods available. Protein is essential for the body as it aids in muscle development, tissue repair, and overall growth. We have all heard many times how especially important it is for women over 50 to get...

Gardening as exercise - drapes of wisteria in early May

Do You Count Gardening as Exercise?

Are you a garden lover? If so, perhaps this is one of the reasons you've decided to stay fit and strong. One of my "whys" for getting strong is to be able to garden for hours without pain or being uncomfortable, but can I really count gardening as exercise? UPDATE: Parade Magazine posted this on Nov 6, a week after I wrote this article: If You Want To Live to 100, Aging Experts Say You Should Take Up This Hobby ASAP. Please note, I don't consider Parade Magazine to be the best source of health and fitness news, but it was interesting to me that it was gardening. The writer, Emily Laurence, is a journalist and health coach. Trimming back overgrown tree branches, moving large clumps of...

Keeping a Fitness Mindset

October is a month that I traditionally have a tough time keeping a fitness mindset. In years past, at the end of September, I participated in the Akron Marathon in a relay team or by running the half (2015 & 16 the team; 2017 & 2018 the half.) After that goal was achieved and October arrived, I was always felt a let down from goal achievement and a bit like taking a break. I haven't done a running race since the 2018 half, but still find that October's weather tends to make me feel like staying inside and less like enjoying outdoor fitness activities. Having Peanut (my dog) really helps me to get out and walk. This weekend I was looking forward to the color changes...
