taking care of ourselves

Taking Care of Ourselves

There’s been so much talk about taking care of ourselves during the COVID-19 pandemic. I don’t know about you but I’m feeling emotionally drained. It’s hard to get motivated to do the things I normally do to stay fit and strong. Strength training has been erratic. Cardio has been not as vigorous as usual. TV watching is up; exercising is down. Eating is up; vegetable consumption is down. This is a challenge, that’s for sure. I am struggling with my emotions, fluctuating from feeling fine to feeling grief and sadness and then moving on to anxiety. Such a great time, really. Are you fighting the same battles? I think many of us are struggling with taking care of ourselves. I’ve been trying to think of what I can...

Walking More and Increasing Veggies during the Quarantine

I've been working on increasing my daily steps and so I've been walking a bit more. Here are a couple of photos from yesterday's walk. The weather here is still mid 40's so walking with a face mask is not a problem. I wear a bandana type face mask and then my neck gaiter from skiing over top of that. I've also been trying to eat more vegetables. Being in quarantine with the days seeming to be the same over and over has caused me to not eat as well as I should. I enjoy eating what my husband cooks, but he definitely cooks for taste and not for calories...

Can’t Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds

I bought Can’t Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds by David Goggins from Audible because I’d heard multiple people, mainly at my gym, say that it was a great book. They said it was very motivational and was about a man who became a Navy Seal. One woman said she didn’t care for the “bad” language in the book. I needed to use a credit on Audible and decided to buy this book. That’s basically what I knew about the book and had no idea who David Goggins is. Therefore, I was startled when he mentioned running ultramarathons. I turned to Google and discovered that David Goggins has an extensive military career but also an extensive endurance race career. Also, apparently he has...

Confined to HOme

Confined to Home

Like many of us, I’m confined to home right now. You would think that means I’m getting lots done but I confess that I’m easily distracted and not nearly as productive as I could be. I already knew this but it’s even more clear to me that I really like going to the gym and that I’m much less likely to do strength training when left to my own devices. I’m just not doing the things I know I should be doing. I could easily spend a half hour doing push ups, squats, and lunges and have a good workout.  It just hasn’t happened yet. Cardio Since I can go outside and, in fact, it’s probably good for me to get some fresh air, I’ve tried to do...

first bike ride of the season

First Bike Ride of the Season

This past week the weather has improved quite a bit here in Ohio and I got my first bike ride of the season! While it was still really cold at 47 degrees, the sun helped. My tire pressure was low, so I pumped the tires up. Actually I was surprised there was still air from last year in the tubes. Checked the brakes. Made sure I remembered which side was the big gear and which one was the small gear. Found my bike gloves, helmet, and bike shoes. Bundled up really well, with an extra sweatshirt and warm socks. After spending so many days at home, it was nice to be out of the house, even for a short first bike ride of the season. I didn't...

eating healthy during uncertain times

Eating Healthy during Uncertain Times

I am finding it difficult to eat healthy and keep my protein, carbohydrate and fat levels in the right amount. Eating healthy during uncertain times has been a big challenge for me. For some reason I am craving carbs and find it difficult to not gravitate to them. Maybe it is the comfort food aspect? Maybe its because I'm anxious and a little bored. I'm looking for a comforting distraction. I'm posting these photos that I took a while back to help inspire me to meal prep veggies and lean protein. While most of the time I am doing fine, I notice I'm more lonely and find myself having a mini pity party over the things that have been curtailed and the routines that I love that...

Trying to Eat Healthy and De-stress During the Stay At Home Time

I'm sure I'm like millions of others, trying to eat healthy and stay de-stressed during this stay-at-home time. Here are some photos of my attempt at a 2 egg white omelette where I used way too many vegetables to the egg white ratio. First I made the vegetables: onions, spinach, mushrooms and sliced grape tomatoes. My dog Lady got the two yokes, which she loves. After the onions were somewhat translucent and the spinach was wilted (using a little water), I stirred in two egg whites. It cooked for a minute or two with the lid on the cast-iron pot.  Getting it out was tricky, as you can see! It doesn't look like an omelette or a fritta, more like a pile of vegetables cooked with an egg white. ...

Why I Listen to Podcasts

Why I Listen to Podcasts

I decided to think about and then share why I listen to podcasts. If you’re reading this blogpost, you’re probably aware that Chris Brown and I are co-hosts of our Fit Strong Women Over 50 podcast. We’re obviously predisposed to listen to podcasts since we produce one regularly. I did listen to podcasts well before Chris and I thought we should start one. My brother recently was housebound while he recovered from an injury. I suggested that he listen to podcasts when he wanted to lie down to rest but maybe didn’t really want to sleep. He wasn’t really aware of podcasts so I suggested a couple that I thought he would enjoy. I pointed out that it might be enjoyable just to listen to something without...
