Ultimate Fitness Challenge

Ultimate Fitness Challenge Recap

My gym holds an Ultimate Fitness Challenge twice a year. I’ve done it a few times over the years. The first time the challenge was held, the age groups were a bit different, so I was in with all women 40 and older. I came in dead last. The age brackets changed after that and now I compete in the 50 and Over challenge. After the first challenge, I trained like crazy and came in first though the age range had changed by then. Still, it felt great to win.  I also compare my time with what others do in their age bracket. Even though the weights or reps are slightly different, I think time is a good measure. Diane from our podcast is in such...

Fun Things to Do in the Evening

It’s the end of the day. Your work is over. You’ve done your workout. You maybe even have all of your steps. Time to relax. What do you do? First, turn off the TV and then consider some of these ideas. Here's a list of fun things to do. Many of these can be done alone or with a friend or family member. Fun Things to Do Go to a movie. Read a book. Color in an adult coloring book. Read poetry. Write poetry. Read a magazine or a blog. Meditate. Make a cup of tea and enjoy a piece of dark chocolate. Savor it. Knit or crochet. I like to make dish cloths. Fast, easy, and make good presents. Go for a stroll in your neighborhood or a park. Write a short story. Ride your bike. Go on...

What Should I Wear? A Guide to Workout Clothes

A young friend and I were talking recently and she said “I spent 20 minutes today trying to figure out what to wear to yoga. You should write about workout clothes in Becoming Elli.” I said, “great idea!” Thinking about this made me remember the horrible gym uniforms we used to wear at school. They were one piece outfits with bloomers and they snapped down the front. Why did we wear those things? Anyone else remember them? Anyway, those days are long gone and now we wear whatever we want to work out in. Workout Clothes So here's my quick list of what to wear for a few sports. Yoga I remember my very first yoga class. I had no idea what to expect. I went to the local drug...

healthy snacks

Healthy Snacks

Chris and I have decreed Monday to be recipe day in the Becoming Elli world. Why? Who knows but we like it. Rather than give you a recipe today, I’m going to list some snacks that I enjoy, just to give you some fresh ideas.  I try to include protein with my carbs in my healthy snacks. Some fat is usually a good idea too. Here are some healthy snacks that I enjoy: Hummus with sugar snap peas. You can use any vegetable or combination of vegetables you want but I love a snack of sugar snap peas with hummus. Fantastic! A handful of nuts. This works but if you’re too hungry, it’s easy to eat more nuts than you probably want to eat in one...

Motivation Fades

When Motivation Fades, Discipline Steps In

So, you start a new way of eating or you start a new class at the gym, or you start a new walking regime. You go strong for a few weeks and then your enthusiasm wanes. You know that feeling when your motivation fades? Do you ever say any of these things? “I just don’t feel like doing it today.” “I think I’ll just sit on the couch and rest today.”. “I deserve a cheat day.” “I’m tired. I’ll do it tomorrow.” “I’ll get back on my way of eating after the weekend.” “This one time won’t hurt.” “I’m just not motivated now.” I know I have said these things and sometimes I let these thoughts prevent me from doing what I’ve promised myself I’m going to do. How do we get around this...

2018 Hop for Hope 5K Race

Hop for Hope 5K Recap: First Race of 2018

The first race I ever ran was the Hop for Hope 5K. When I ran it the first time, we started at Hale Farm in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, ran on a little side road down to a covered bridge and back. It was very scenic and also very hilly. The hills were indeed a challenge. [caption id="attachment_1089" align="aligncenter" width="199"] 2014 Hop for Hope 5K Finish Line[/caption] I ran the 5K twice on that trail. Then the race changed to a main road in the park and now the course is much flatter. It’s not quite as scenic but I’m guessing people complained about the hills. [caption id="attachment_1088" align="aligncenter" width="300"] 2015 Hop for Hope 5K[/caption] Then in 2016,  I ran the 10K. This year I returned to the...

Maintain Weight Loss

Five Ways to Maintain Weight Loss

There’s lots of talk about people dieting, losing weight, and then gaining the weight back. There was the Biggest Loser study that was released last year that I think made a lot of people feel like why should they bother trying to be a healthy weight. But, I think we can ignore the Biggest Loser because most of us (all of us?) are not losing weight by starving ourselves and working out at a high intensity for 8 hours each day. So, we lose weight more slowly and I think that means we can manage to maintain weight loss. Also, even if you don’t lose weight, for most of us, it’s a reasonable goal not to gain weight. So how do we maintain our current weight? Have...

Indoor Cycling: Go for the Class

One of the things that keeps coming up in our podcasts is the difference between working out on your own, with a trainer, or in a class. I am now the firm believer that if you want to do indoor cycling, take the class. Chris wrote about indoor cycling a few months ago and when I went back to read what she had to say, it's pretty clear she goes to classes and doesn't sit by herself pedaling away. Actually, it's hard to imagine Chris going off by herself and bicycling indoors solo. I don't think anyone is going to hire a trainer to supervise bike riding, though I guess you never know. We’re doing a challenge at my gym and I have to get a...

International Women’s Day Calls for Deadlifts

March 8 is International Women’s Day. This year I happened to be at the gym working out with Maria Stadelman and I was doing deadlifts.  Somehow we got the idea that since it was International Women's Day, we were celebrating by seeing how heavy I could lift. Hey, you know things can get a little goofy in the gym. Deadlifts are a strength-building lift that involves lifting a weighted bar from the floor to your hips. Deadlifts provide a full-body workout and are great for building strength. There's lots of information online about deadlifts and you can see a variety of videos on Youtube, of course. According to Nerd Fitness, "when you deadlift, you use every single muscle in your body." Deadlifts differ from squats because...

Running Playlist

2018 Running Playlist

The past couple of years I’ve tried different ways to put together a running playlist and have had varying degrees of success. The fact that songs on my Amazon account often don’t transfer to other music players and that I was getting music from a variety of sources meant I often had problems. This year I’m trying Spotify. My son gave me access to a Spotify account where I can create a playlist and then download it to my phone. Downloading is important for those outside runs because I don’t have a cellphone plan with unlimited streaming so a long run with streaming costs money eventually. So, this gives me the chance to start over with my running list. Last year’s running playlist turned into a bit...
