2020 Fitbit Goals

Achieving 2020 Fitbit Goals

I ended up setting 2020 Fitbit goals when earlier this year I checked out my Fitbit stats to see what my annual numbers were. I discovered that I'd had a drop in everything in 2019. Even though I was more than half-way through 2020, I decided to set a goal of exceeding my 2019 numbers. 2020 Fitbit Goals In  this chart, you can see where I was at the end of August and then the new data for the balance of the year. Year Steps Floors Miles Calories 2020 (Sept – Dec) 1,746,319 2260  777.75 292,848 2020 (Jan - Aug) 2,753,992 4030 1,227.36 561,806 2019 3,688,570 4274 1,649.06 812,909 2018 4,341,364 6801 1,913.71 896,669 2017 4,662,734 5635 2,118.93 910,336 2016 4,824,029 6836 2,182.38 868,856 2015 4,253,875 7124 1,971.57 810,115 2014 3,071,844 5713 1,365.49 778,890 2013 (Mar - Dec) 2,505,079 4481 1,101.9 731,658 Totals 31,847,806  47,154  14,308.15 6,664,090  I met my goal! Intervals on the Treadmill

Rediscovering Intervals on the Treadmill

Recently I ran intervals on the treadmill in my hotel's fitness center. I forced myself to go down to the room and do something. When I got there, I decided I didn't really have the energy to use the dumbbells and decided to just go with the treadmill. I remembered a recent conversation where I said I used to do a lot of interval training on the treadmill over the winter. I've been staying in a hotel over the holidays dealing with some family problems so it's been a stressful time. I know that taking care of myself is important. This hotel has a nice fitness center and it's a shame not to take advantage of it. I was the only person in the room for the...

The First Steps to Losing Weight

The First Steps to Losing Weight

What are the first steps to losing weight? You’ve decided that you need to lose some weight and now you need to figure out what the first steps are. Sometimes the hardest thing to do when you’re trying to make any kind of change is to simply start. Do You Need to Lose Weight? The first step is probably to determine if you actually need to lose weight and why you want to do so. If your doctor has told you that you need to  lose weight, then you probably need to do so. When you realize that your clothes have become tight or you need to buy larger sizes, you probably might consider losing some weight. If you just don’t like how you look, maybe you...

Walking the Dog Adds Lots of Steps

Walking the Dog Adds Lots of Steps

I just realized that walking the dog adds lots of steps to my daily totals. I knew that, of course, but when I looked at my Fitbit numbers, there was the proof. Remember when I got my puppy, Penny? I wrote about her last summer when she was a baby. Now Penny is about six months old so still a puppy but she's more like a pre-teen these days. She keeps me very busy with taking things out of her mouth and stopping her from chewing on things. My expensive She Fits sports bra no longer zips because Penny chewed the zipper. She also got the back of my newest pair (and most expensive) pair of running shoes. Fortunately, I caught her with the shoe early enough...

Coconut Yogurt in the Instant Pot

Making Coconut Yogurt in the Instant Pot

I figured out how to make coconut yogurt in the Instant Pot. It's easy though it does take some time. I've been trying to eat more fermented foods and when we talked with Christine Bailey on a recent podcast, she said yogurt was a great option. She also recommended coconut yogurt if you are not eating dairy. I've been avoiding dairy for a few months because a doctor suggested that some of my skin problems might be related to dairy. Like most of us, I  love certain dairy products. Cheese, sour cream, cream in my coffee. I love all of that. But eliminating all of that has helped me feel better. I do like yogurt. For a long time my go-to breakfast was plain Greek yogurt with berries...

Miso Ginger Noodle Soup

Miso Ginger Noodle Soup

It's fall here in Ohio and my heart has turned to soup. My Miso Ginger Noodle Soup is a great soup and very easy because I used convenience foods to make it. I know we're always talking about not using prepared foods but I think this worked out well. The miso-ginger stock that I used was something I bought at Trader Joe's. It's fantastic. I used to buy regular miso there but they no longer carry it. (At least right now. You never know what they'll carry or discontinue.) I had intended to make my own miso stock but this was convenient and tasted great. I had a bag of frozen stir fry vegetables so I decided to use that. Rummaging around in the refrigerator uncovered some...

2020 Buckeye Half Marathon and 10K

Race Recap of the 2020 Buckeye Half Marathon and 10K

I ran the 2020 Buckeye Half Marathon and 10K this past weekend. It made me remember why I like to run races. Running the Buckeye Half Marathon and 10K is turning into a tradition of sorts. I ran the same race last year in 2019. Reading last year's recap is bittersweet because I said I wanted to train over the winter for the 2020 race season and as we know, that didn't happen. I ran the 10K again. Two years ago I trained for the half marathon and somehow injured myself and missed the race. I've stuck with the shorter distance for now. 2020 Buckeye Half Marathon and 10K This course for this race is a run through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. It's a large loop almost completely...

30-Day Ketogenic Cleanse

The 30-Day Ketogenic Cleanse by Maria Emmerich

Maria Emmerich has written a lot of books about following a ketogenic diet so I checked out The 30-Day Ketogenic Cleanse. I wanted to call this a cookbook but the publisher calls it a guidebook. I suppose that is more accurate because it covers a lot of information. We've often talked about the keto diet often on the Fit, Strong Women over 50 podcast. Most recently, we talked to Keto Woman. Overview of The 30-Day Ketogenic Cleanse The book is divided into five parts. Part 1 tells you how to heal your body. This section discusses why a ketogenic diet is good for you. She touches on cholesterol and Alzheimer's and describes the problems with consuming carbohydrates. She also covers information about consuming fat and sugar and the...

Are We Ever Happy with Ourselves

Are We Ever Happy with Ourselves?

Are we every happy with ourselves? This is the question I asked myself recently. Dreaming The other night I dreamt that I was going to attend someone's wedding. I'm not sure who was getting married but I realized that this person was a former co-worker. In my dream, I realized that a different former co-worker who I did not get along with was also going to be at the wedding. In my sleep, I immediately thought, "What am I going to wear? I have to look my best if he's going to be there." What? Even in my sleep, I'm worrying about how others perceive me and my appearance? Wow. That was amazing to me. Actually, it's rather depressing. Doctor Visit Right around the same time as that dream, I...

Brussels Sprouts and Kale Salad

Brussels Sprouts and Kale Salad

I came up with this Brussels Sprouts and Kale Salad to help celebrate the fall season. Fall is a great time of year for the hardier vegetables like Brussels sprouts and kale. I went to make lunch the other day while my daughter-in-law was visiting and said, "I know. Let's make this salad I've been thinking about." We both enjoyed it and we both had some ideas on how to improve it. It's been quite a while since I posted about my cruciferous crunch salad. This is in the same vein but has a simpler dressing and fewer veggies. I bet you could use a bag of cruciferous crunch salad with this recipe. This recipe uses sliced Brussels sprouts and chopped kale. You can buy both of...
