My Three Words 2021

My Three Words for 2021: Create, Lift, and Rally

It's time for my three words for 2021. Choosing three words to reflect my goals for the year has become an annual tradition.  I actually think it might have been Chris who started me on doing this. I dug out last year's words. As you can see, I wrote a post about them but then the year got so crazy that I forgot all about it. You're supposed to review your words every day to  keep them in your mind but I obviously didn't do that. My words for last year were Abstain, Routine, and Family. I spent a lot of time dealing with family issues so I guess that was accurate without even trying. I don't think I abstained from much and my routine fell...

Planning for a GREAT 2021

Planning for a GREAT 2021

My first post of 2020 was full of hope and optimism. WhileI believe this first post of 2021 will help me in planning for a great 2021, I realize that I will temper my hope, enthusiasm and optimism. I have a pivoted my perspective due to the pandemic. For the majority of 2020 I have been dealing with a "new normal" during the pandemic and I adjusted my life accordingly. Intensified family situations have increased stress. Through all this I learned how my sense of community and loose ties make such a difference in my day to day mental attitude. Last year my 3 words were declutter, habit and grateful. I regrouped around March 15 and many times just tried to just focus on building mental resilience....

Are We Ever Happy with Ourselves

Are We Ever Happy with Ourselves?

Are we every happy with ourselves? This is the question I asked myself recently. Dreaming The other night I dreamt that I was going to attend someone's wedding. I'm not sure who was getting married but I realized that this person was a former co-worker. In my dream, I realized that a different former co-worker who I did not get along with was also going to be at the wedding. In my sleep, I immediately thought, "What am I going to wear? I have to look my best if he's going to be there." What? Even in my sleep, I'm worrying about how others perceive me and my appearance? Wow. That was amazing to me. Actually, it's rather depressing. Doctor Visit Right around the same time as that dream, I...

Motivation of a Race

The Motivation of a Race

There’s a lot of motivation in signing up for a race, at least for me. I’m much more likely to really follow a training plan if I have something on the calendar. This year has not been a good one for racing. I think 2020 will be known as the year of no races, among other things. Buckeye Half Marathon and 10K I noticed the Buckeye Half Marathon and 10K is still scheduled. It hasn’t been cancelled yet. Of course, it’s quite possible that it will be cancelled but as of right now, it’s still a possibility. I have a several year history with this race. The first year, I registered for a half marathon and then ended up getting my sciatic injury that took me out for quite...

pushing through the roadblocks

Pushing Through the Roadblocks to get Fit and Strong

I want to be pushing through the roadblocks. I want to be fit and strong, For some reason I think that taking on big challenges, or challenges in general right now, is a good idea. I fully blame the corona isolation quarantine thing for my exercise stall. My mental game is different than how it has been the past 12 years of working toward the elusive goal, and now I'm hitting roadblocks. Seeing this little violet bloom in between the cracks of the concrete driveway inspired me today. I'm going to revisit the cue/habit thing. I'll say my mantras. Work my "to-do" list plan my day/week/month. Maybe I can get things clicking like they used to. The book The Power of Habit really links the cue...

Can’t Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds

I bought Can’t Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds by David Goggins from Audible because I’d heard multiple people, mainly at my gym, say that it was a great book. They said it was very motivational and was about a man who became a Navy Seal. One woman said she didn’t care for the “bad” language in the book. I needed to use a credit on Audible and decided to buy this book. That’s basically what I knew about the book and had no idea who David Goggins is. Therefore, I was startled when he mentioned running ultramarathons. I turned to Google and discovered that David Goggins has an extensive military career but also an extensive endurance race career. Also, apparently he has...

Mid January Re-Focus

There is a certain day in January that recognized as the day most people quit their resolutions. I think I might have hit that earlier than normal. It's been a weird start of the new year: I had taken a flu shot, but still "caught" a bit of something. I participated in an awesome healthy living / self care / meditation / yoga workshop, but ended up having back spasms on the way home. From driving??? Not sure. It took a couple of days with hot rice bags and stretches to get the kinks out. Signed up for a "biggest loser" challenge at the gym. And in 2 weeks, somehow I've gained 2.4 pounds. (Honestly, I think it is salt and timing.) Snow fall the...
