What I Learned About Supporting Runners at a Big Race

I had an amazing inspirational day on Saturday. The started with a bit of rain and an amazing double rainbow. I only caught part of it, but how often is there a rainbow at 7 am?? For several hours I cheered the runners compete in the Akron Marathon, Half Marathon and Team Relay through the streets of Akron, Ohio. I was a spectator along with another estimated 99,999 other people! Over the past 4 years I ran in this race. Both in 2015 & 2016 I was on a marathon relay team and in 2017 & 2018 I ran the half marathon. This year my participation was limited to making it about supporting runners by cheering and high five-ing. I've done a lot of volunteering at water stations over...

Bike Ride Recap of the 2019 Buckeye Breakaway

Fun. Challenging. Hot. Lots of food and laughs. Exhausting. Sleep Depriving. Happy. Silly. Tiring. Inspiring. Great. The recap of the bike ride for 2019 Buckeye Breakaway with my team the SOB's was all these things and more. Take a couple minutes to watch the video below with the Skiers on Bikes, read this recap and learn about my experiences this year!! About my bike: My bike is a 1988 53" Cannondale with downtube shifters that we bought from Craigslist in 2012. The previous owner barely rode it and it was like new. Except for the bent fork. I suspect during one of their first rides, they ran into a ditch and then didn't ride again. Then 24 years later I bought it. The bike is 31 years old...

You Dont have to Listen to Negative Voices

You Don’t Have to Listen

When that little voice in your head says "Are you kidding?!? You are too old." You don't have to listen. When you think about a new challenge and think "I can't do that! That's too much/too tall/too long/ too hard." You have a choice. You don't have to listen to those negative thoughts. Or when you look in the mirror and the mirror looks back as if to say "No, not you." YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LISTEN. It took me a long time to learn this. Who am I kidding? I'm still trying to learn this. Ha ha! It's easy to forget that the one person who is holding me back is...

Getting Back into the Groove

Getting Back into the Groove

I'm struggling with getting back into the groove of my usual routines and good habits. My planned consistency has taken a back seat to summer social activities. It's funny. I looked forward to summer so much so that I could be outside, running, riding and building my physical levels. Looking back over this year (since summer is more than half over now) between the family vacation, reunions, birthdays, a long wedding weekend, kayak trips and camp-outs, my summer has had more social activity and less physical activity than the last eight or nine summers have had. A regular schedule and a set routine helps ensure I plan my meals, shop for healthy produce regularly, and consistently get solid exercise. Don't get me wrong, I love connecting...

Improving Flexibility in Tendons and Ligaments with Yin Yoga

I used to only focus on muscles and strength, but as I get older I am finding that being strong and improving flexible in tendons and ligaments has become more important to me. One way I am working on improving my tendons and ligaments with through yoga. I am very much a beginner and am still have so much to learn. Perhaps you've been in a yoga practice for a long time. 3 Tips for Motivation using Little Rewards

Keeping focused on healthy eating, working out and being fit is very important to me. It's both a long term and a short term goal. I know that staying focused and motivated will lead to bigger successes and reaching my goals. Some days however, I'm just not feeling it, so I have some mental tricks I use. One of the tricks is something I call "Little Rewards" that use tools to finish something to get on to the next thing. It's like playing a little game with myself. Maybe everyone does this and it is nothing new or earth shaking. But if not, I thought I'd share what goes in my head when I'm trying to motivate myself. These Little Rewards flip some switch in my brain....
