Develop Sustainable Fitness

Ten Ways to Develop Sustainable Fitness

How do we develop sustainable fitness? Last week I wrote about what sustainable fitness is. Basically, it’s doing things that you can continue to do long term. It’s focusing on ways to continue to be fit once a short term goal is met. Sustainable fitness is figuring out how to be able to continue to move through our daily lives and be able to accomplish what we want to accomplish. Chris and I have talked about wanting to be able to lift our own suitcases. That’s what sustainable fitness does for us. So here are ten ways to develop sustainable fitness. Accept that there will be ups and downs in your journey. We will deal with illness, either our own or someone in the family. We may experience...

Habits Help Me Stay Fit

While this past year has not been one with a lot of big activity for me, some of the routines and habits I have put in place are really helping me to stay fit. I noticed that I automatically do some things, mostly out of habit, but they are helpful, healthy routines that I thought I'd share. The things that I learned - especially about habits - have really helped me to stay more fit and active than I would have. Over the past year+ (during the Covid pandemic), I haven't had the type of big goals like I did set a few years back. However I've still been able to keep up some exercise. While I'm not running any races right now, I still try to continue...

Staying cool by walking around a lake in the shade

Staying Cool during the Hot Days of Summer

Is it just me, or is getting harder to stay cool? It's been very hot outside and I've noticed my body isn't adjusted to the hot temperatures of summer yet! Too Hot to Handle My 22-mile bike ride this past weekend required two 24 oz water bottles, a scarf with pellets to soak in water to keep my neck cold and a large ice water from the restaurant at breakfast. Even so, according to my FitBit I had an hour and 23 minutes of peak heart rate, which by any of my standards is too much. Although I enjoyed breakfast in the middle of the ride, it pushed the second half of the ride later in the day and we didn't finish up until almost 1 in...

why stay fit

Why I am Focused on Staying Fit

Why stay fit? It's hard sometimes to remember why. And then I have a couple of weeks like the past two weeks that remind me in so many wonderful ways. Vacation: My family took a vacation to the beach and I enjoyed it immensely. Although we have traveled to this same beach many times during the past 28 years, I think this year had special meaning. Following the pandemic, I am so very very thankful for my good health and strong body. I spent a lot of time at the beach walking the dog early morning and late afternoon. We walked for hours on the beach, listening to the waves and enjoying the smells of salt water. The weather didn't always cooperate, but I still loved it. It was Peanut's first...

Peanut: My New Dog = More Steps

Having a dog in my life definitely adds more steps to my day! I find that I am more motivated to take longer walks as well as getting outside for a short walk during the day. Welcome to Peanut, a 9-year-old Shibu Inu mix. She's my granddog. Her full name is Princess Peanut Brittle and she is living with my husband and myself after a couple of minor incidents when my grandson was playing with her dog toys. While she is a lovely sweet dog, she really can't be trusted with a baby who crawls and grabs dog toys and fur. All of us agreed that we didn't want any major incidents! Getting Outside on More Walking Trails

I never realized how many walking trails that there are about 5 to 10 miles from my house. This spring I've been taking advantage of them and getting more minutes than I was last year. Several reasons for my increased walking: A new dog in my household Now that I'm vaccinated, I'm not as worried about the pandemic I'm using walking as one of the stress relievers in my life Even with juggling obligations, it's easier to fit in than other exercise Last week I mentioned some of the walking trails that Peanut and I have ventured on and I thought I'd do an update this week. She already knows when we are getting ready to go and gets excited to be walking trails. This past week...

2021 Step Goal

Check in on 2021 Step Goal

Time to check in on my 2021 step goal! We've just finished the first quarter of 2021 and I thought I should see how I'm doing with my Fitbit stats. Last year, I resolved over half way through the year that I was going to try to beat my 2019 statistics and I managed to do that. When I looked at my Fitbit numbers for the past seven years, I saw that 2016 was my best year. I was doing a lot of running that year so it's not surprising. I decided that for 2021, I would beat my best and get 5,000,000 steps by the end of the year. In order to reach this goal, I need to walk an average of 13,700 steps a day....

Food and Activity during the Ides of March

Mid-March is a fun time of year for me. The 15th is called the Ides of March (which is supposed to be a warning, but I don't heed it!) This past week has been very enjoyable. It feels like the beginning of spring and the end of winter. Lots of changes with the weather has brought cold sunshine or unexpectedly warm, windy days. I'm looking forward to more outside activities in the coming weeks! Walking More Jill and I had an opportunity to walk outside and catch up in person! Of course we wore our Becoming Elli masks, since we are still in the end stages (hopefully) of the COVID-19 pandemic here in Ohio. I enjoyed seeing lots of birds flying while I was visiting at my...
