Return to Boot Camp Class

My Return to Boot Camp Class

I’d like to say that my  return to boot camp class at my gym was a great success and that I left the class in a moment of triumph. It wasn’t quite that exciting, I confess. In fact, I felt glad that I  managed to scrape through the session. I realized that I had not been to boot camp class in almost two years. How is that possible? I went to this class every Saturday morning for several years. Well, I was dealing with some family issues out of town in the beginning of 2020 and then of course the gyms as well as the world just shut down. I returned to the gym over a year ago but at first the classes at the gym had...

Five Things to Know When Starting at the Gym

Five Things to Know When Starting at the Gym

Five things to know when starting at the gym? Obviously, there could be many more than this but I thought I'd share a few ideas. Many of us don’t go to the gym regularly so that when we sign up, we feel overwhelmed. It can be intimidating to go to the gym but it can also be enjoyable. Here are some tips to help make starting at a gym a rewarding experience. Don’t overdo it. We get excited to start our new fitness routine and tend to over do it with weight or repetitions when we first get there. After all, if some is good, more is better, right? Wrong, in this case. All you’ll end up doing is hurting yourself. Your muscles will be too...

This simple way of holding herself accountable has...

Mid January Re-Focus

There is a certain day in January that recognized as the day most people quit their resolutions. I think I might have hit that earlier than normal. It's been a weird start of the new year: I had taken a flu shot, but still "caught" a bit of something. I participated in an awesome healthy living / self care / meditation / yoga workshop, but ended up having back spasms on the way home. From driving??? Not sure. It took a couple of days with hot rice bags and stretches to get the kinks out. Signed up for a "biggest loser" challenge at the gym. And in 2 weeks, somehow I've gained 2.4 pounds. (Honestly, I think it is salt and timing.) Snow fall the...

Keeping my toes happy with special exercises and exercise modifications

Keeping My Toes Happy

I have challenges with my toes. While not nearly as serious as some of my friends, I noticed changes in my toes and feet over the last few years. My feet are starting to look like my mother's. I've got some bunion action on two different joints. My baby toe and 4th toe now stay in the rolled position on both sides. Toes 2 and 3 are not looking hammered, so that makes me very happy. However, it is big toe, number one, that is starting to give me some grief. They have developed a distinct angle to them, which is not natural. We have lots of sayings about them too: "Toe the line." "Going toe to toe." "From head to toe." Toes are the foundation. When...

Benefits of the Bench Press

Benefits of the Bench Press

Benefits of the Bench Press? Really? Yes, I’m going to talk about why you might do a bench press at the gym. I have been trying to up my strength training lately. I felt like I was not progressing as I should be, or, really, that I was sliding backwards. That’s one thing about being my age. It’s easier to lose muscle than to gain it. Plus, here in Ohio, it's heading into winter. It's becoming more difficult to run outside and it's easier to spend more time at the gym. It's the season of strength training. I need to get upper body workouts in and the bench press is a great way to work on it. If you do a push/pull schedule, the chest press falls...

Getting Back into the Groove

Getting Back into the Groove

I'm struggling with getting back into the groove of my usual routines and good habits. My planned consistency has taken a back seat to summer social activities. It's funny. I looked forward to summer so much so that I could be outside, running, riding and building my physical levels. Looking back over this year (since summer is more than half over now) between the family vacation, reunions, birthdays, a long wedding weekend, kayak trips and camp-outs, my summer has had more social activity and less physical activity than the last eight or nine summers have had. A regular schedule and a set routine helps ensure I plan my meals, shop for healthy produce regularly, and consistently get solid exercise. Don't get me wrong, I love connecting...

Fitness Challenge Recap

Recently, I participated in my gym's fitness challenge. I was nervous about signing up because I felt like my training had been erratic this year due to injury and traveling but when I saw the list of activities, I decided to give it a try. Yoga On The Beach

This week was a vacation with my family at the beach in North Carolina. Each day I tried to make sure that I got at least my 75 minutes of some sort of activity each day. It was definitely different being away from home! This past week I did a variety of exercises...
