Getting Back to Basics

After a really busy November, a conversation I had with Jill made me think it's time for me to get back to basics. I find it’s easy to get caught up in the extreme or the minutia of exercising, healthy eating and motivation. Sometimes when I start overthinking, I stop doing. What is back to basics? For me, back to basics means seven things: 1. Drink water. I like to feel my bike water bottles, and put a rubber band around them so I know how many bottles I finished per day. Using my bike water bottles also reminds me of all the fun I have biking. 2. Stand up and walk at least 250 steps each hour. My FitBit around my wrist reminds me at 50 minutes...

Vaccines and Shots to Avoid Illness

Vaccines have been in the news this past week. Different companies announced early results from tests on their vaccines to fight COVID-19 (Pfizer and its German partner, BioNTech, and the other by biotechnology firm Modern.) It was about this time last year when I got a flu shot. And this past week I got my flu shot, so now two years in a row I got the flu shot. With almost every news story about COVID-19, illness is top of mind. Just a few minutes ago, my daughter texted me and my husband about getting a pneumonia vaccine. Neither of us have had that vaccine, but perhaps we should. The way I understand it, there are three causes of pneumonia (viral, bacterial and heart-related) and the shot...

fun of fall biking

The Fun of Fall Biking

With the change of seasons here in Northeast Ohio I am missing the sun of summer, but I have to admit that I am really enjoying the fun of fall biking. The weather is a bit more brisk in the morning, the haze of summer is gone and I don't get overheated. The fall leaves are just starting to change. After consistently riding almost every weekend of the summer, I feel strong. This was a record breaking summer since I started riding my bike again and tracking it in Strava. Due to the corona virus pandemic, I severely limited gatherings with my friends. This meant that I didn't get together with alot of friends and I've really missed doing the very fun, long long bike rides with...

fiber and flavor salad

Fiber and Flavor in My Favorite Salad

Regular readers know how much I love this salad. Perhaps you have developed a favorite go-to salad much like my perfect no panic potluck salad. One reason I love this salad it that it doesn't spoil quickly because the dressing is olive oil, vinegar and lemon juice. Another reason is that you can easily up the protein by adding beans and tuna. I usually add dill and basil to the dressing and toss. It's great if you make it the day ahead because the flavor gets into all the veggies and really tastes great. Of course the taste is something I really love. This time of year adding fresh veggies right out of the garden makes it especially appealing. Cucumbers, tomatoes, and fresh squash or zucchini are...
