Lisa Bartlett is an active member of the Becoming Elli community. Last year she began to tell us about training for a marathon but then she ended up having to run it virtually because of the pandemic. She persisted and ran the race and even won first place in her age group. Lisa Bartlett is a 53-year old mom to a 10-year old daughter and special needs teenager, and has a busy real estate business. Lisa was never athletic growing up. Her...

2020 Buckeye Half Marathon and 10K

Race Recap of the 2020 Buckeye Half Marathon and 10K

I ran the 2020 Buckeye Half Marathon and 10K this past weekend. It made me remember why I like to run races. Running the Buckeye Half Marathon and 10K is turning into a tradition of sorts. I ran the same race last year in 2019. Reading last year's recap is bittersweet because I said I wanted to train over the winter for the 2020 race season and as we know, that didn't happen. I ran the 10K again. Two years ago I trained for the half marathon and somehow injured myself and missed the race. I've stuck with the shorter distance for now. 2020 Buckeye Half Marathon and 10K This course for this race is a run through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. It's a large loop almost completely...

Recap of Buckeye Half Marathon and 10K

Recap of Buckeye Half Marathon and 10K

Last weekend I ran the 2019 Buckeye Half Marathon and 10K. Well, I ran the 10K part. Others ran the half marathon. The 10K ended up being a bit longer than it was supposed to be because the course was set up for the half marathon and then they figured out the 10K. Instead of running 6.2 miles, I ran closer to 6.5 miles. I didn't think that was all that unusual because races often seem to go long. The last race I ran was in April. It was the 5K Hop for Hope. I went back and looked at my results from the spring race. My pace for the 10K was a bit slower than it was for the 5K but that makes sense since it...

What I Learned About Supporting Runners at a Big Race

I had an amazing inspirational day on Saturday. The started with a bit of rain and an amazing double rainbow. I only caught part of it, but how often is there a rainbow at 7 am?? For several hours I cheered the runners compete in the Akron Marathon, Half Marathon and Team Relay through the streets of Akron, Ohio. I was a spectator along with another estimated 99,999 other people! Over the past 4 years I ran in this race. Both in 2015 & 2016 I was on a marathon relay team and in 2017 & 2018 I ran the half marathon. This year my participation was limited to making it about supporting runners by cheering and high five-ing. I've done a lot of volunteering at water stations over...

Fitness Challenge Recap

Recently, I participated in my gym's fitness challenge. I was nervous about signing up because I felt like my training had been erratic this year due to injury and traveling but when I saw the list of activities, I decided to give it a try. Fitness Challenge We had one minute to complete the exercises with two minutes of rest in between. Here's what we had to do: Row on the rowing machine Push ups, as many as possible. Women over 50 did modified push ups. Dumbbell Farmer's Carry. Women over 50 carried a pair of 30 pound dumbbells. A running agility test. The goal was to do it as quickly as possible. Dead lift four different bars with progressively heavier weights. Women over 50 lifted 75, 105,...

tire pull at the Cleveland 2019 terrain race

Terrain Race – Cleveland – Recap

I did the Terrain Race in Cleveland last Saturday. I signed up for this 5K race after the coaxing by my daughter last January. Over the years, I have been to a couple Warrior Dash events, but as a spectator only. This gave me a little insight into the shenanigans of an obstacle race -- or at least see what people look like afterwards. During the time between when I registered and the actual race, I had many thoughts of "what have I got myself into?!?" This post is a long race recap with a play by play of the obstacles and my impressions. Four reasons I should NOT have enjoyed myself: 1. This race was definitely designed for young people (I maybe saw 6 other people my...

becoming an athlete after retirement

Becoming a Triathlete After Retirement – Linda Brooks

In episode 33, Jill and Chris talk with Linda Brooks, about becoming a triathlete after retirement. Linda became active after she retired from her work as a medical transcriptionist and now regularly swims, bikes and runs. Download | Play in New Window Please Subscribe: Apple Podcasts  (iTunes) | Google Podcasts | Android-Google Play | Stitcher | Player FM | Castbox | Tunein | Spotify | RSS Linda started running in 2011 and has a group of friends that call themselves the 50+ Posse. She gets up early in the morning to workout. Around 2015 she started bicycling. She was active in the Slow Roll bicycling group in Cleveland that meets every Monday at different locations to ride through the city for about ten miles. It is good for beginner bike riders because the group rides slowly. Other cities also have Slow Roll bicycle clubs. Linda retired in December 2015 and...

Spring Running Events

Spring has sprung! It's getting warmer everyday here in Northeastern Ohio and I'm reminded that there are lots of spring running events and races. [caption id="attachment_2997" align="aligncenter" width="240"] Jill and I took a hike along Daffodil Trail with my dog, Lady.[/caption] Jill wrote about her adventures in the annual Hop for Hope 5K run. Later this month I will be working a water station at the 6 mile marker for the Cleveland 10 Miler and, depending on my ankle and the weather, I will hopefully be competing again in the Raccoon Run. If you're looking for a race or running event near you, check out the Let's Do This website to find something fun in your area....

2019 Hop for Hope 5K

First Race of 2019 Hop for Hope 5K

Last week I ran the 2019 Hop for Hope 5K. This is getting to be a tradition. It’s April 2019 and I ran my first race of the year. I’ve run this race a few times which I wrote about last year. It also seems to be a tradition that I’m not feeling prepared for running the race. I suspect that’s because it’s April and early spring in Ohio. Quick recap of the race. I would say fewer people signed up for the race this year. This could be due to a few other 5/10 Ks going on in the area on the same day. It was a beautiful spring day with perfect temperatures for running, about 50 degrees Fahrenheit.  It was sunny and dry. Really,...

Running and Staying Healthy with Wendy Rivard

Download | Play in New Window Please Subscribe: Apple Podcasts  (iTunes) | Google Podcasts | Android-Google Play | Stitcher | Player FM | Castbox | Tunein | Spotify | RSS In episode 31, Jill and Chris talked with Wendy Rivard about her fitness journey. Wendy has been a runner for most of her adult life. She is a pediatric nurse practitioner for a large medical practice in Chicago. Besides running, she does a lot of yoga, strength trains at a Cross Fit box, enjoys boot camps, water skiing, stand up paddle boarding, and kayaking. She started running to help deal with anxiety in her 20's, and continued running to help with other life challenges: infertility in her 30's, stress of grad school in her 40's, and now in her "old age", she continues to run to help her stay healthy. In 2014, she achieved a personal record of 4 hours...
