Ride Review: Trying out the Cyclebar Cycling Studio

This past week, the nearby Cyclebar cycling studio had a coupon for a free week of cycling so I tried out a class on Labor Day Monday. For the free trial, you log into their website, reserve a seat ahead of time and they assign you a bike location. When I walked into the reception area, the first thing I noticed was how new and shiny everything looked. The young woman at the front desk directed me to the row of little iPads so I could check in, get my seat assignment, and borrow shoes, if needed. I had brought my own clip-in shoes, but they had lots of new-looking bike shoes to use if you didn't own your own bike shoes. My first impression of Cyclebar: ...

What I’ve Learned During Six Years of Yoga Practice

The thought of a "Yoga Practice" used to intimidate the heck out of me. I had a lot of preconceived notions about yoga. For most of my life, I thought that yoga was made up of lot of impossible poses that looked very possibly painful. I pictured a session filled with an instructor calling out unusual animal names for poses and routines like dolphin, cow, alligator and up dog/downward dog...

A Workout Wrap up from Last Week’s Fitness

Most weeks I have a plan for working out but sometimes my week just rolls along. That's how I felt about last week's workouts. Monday - rest day - restorative yoga After lots of driving for sister weekend, Monday's workout consisted of a restful day. I find that weekends are usually a busy time for me, so having a Monday yoga class at my gym fits well into the schedule. Restorative yoga is a workout for the brain where you help your body learn to relax. I am learning how to let go, focus on breathing and getting my body to relax. Tuesday - slow jog [caption id="attachment_1890" align="aligncenter" width="300"] The goldenrod are just starting to open up in this field near my run/jog/walk.[/caption] The weather wasn't cooperating very much...

Rejuvenate with a Hike along the GAP

If you're like me and your legs get stiff from driving too long, you might enjoy taking some time and rejuvenate with a hike. This little waterfall treasure is an oasis located in Rockwood, Pennsylvania, which is about 10 miles south of the Somerset exit #110 on the PA turnpike. Why was I in the middle of Western PA taking a photo of this little waterfall? It was part of an annual tradition of Sisters Weekend. You see, I grew up with three sisters. We are close in age - my parents had four daughters within five years - and even now, we are still close to each other, although the miles separate us. The four of us try to meet up once a year to reconnect. Usually...

What I Have Learned in 7 Years of Training for my Annual 150 Mile Bike Ride

I'm doing the MS150 bike ride this weekend! Before I got fit, if you had told me that I'd be comfortable riding 150 miles on a bicycle, I would have thought you were crazy. The first ride I took with the team I eventually joined, I remember really wanting to turn around before we had even ridden 4 miles. I was riding a hybrid-style bike with big heavy tires and a wide puffy seat. I thought it would be comfortable, but I now know that a street bike with skinny tires and a tiny seat, that fits my sit bones, is way more comfortable and easier to ride. It all started in winter of 2011 when I tried spinning at my gym. I signed up to do...

Salad Recipe with Cucumber, Feta, Tomato, Chick Peas

Last weekend I enjoyed a Mama Mia movie party with several friends. We had a delicious spread of various Mediterranean salads and chicken on the grill. I decided to recreate the cucumber feta tomato chick pea salad for a birthday party! Light, delicious, and easy to make - this is a guilt-free enjoyable salad that is stays fresh in the summer humidity. I find that I really enjoy salads that are based on more than just lettuce. - Chris Ingredients: cucumbers chick peas grape tomatoes onions feta cheese Directions: Wash outside of cucumber. Slice cucumber down the length into dill pickle sized spears. Cut into bit size pieces. Open and drain chick peas (also known as garbanzo beans.) Pat dry before combining with other ingredients. Slice grape tomatoes into quarters. Dice...

Gardening is Much Easier Physically For Me Now that I am Fit

People who have known me for a long time, know that I love gardening. Since I lost the weight and started exercising regularly, my gardening time is part of my "free time" that has been traded for exercise classes and bike rides. It is physically easier than it was 10 or 15 years ago. Gardening used to be my main form of exercise then and I would spend hours with my plants. [caption id="attachment_1654" align="aligncenter" width="688"] Hollyhock, Japanese Iris and Rhododendron[/caption] Perennials vs Annuals Luckily, I planted perennials, which mean they come up year after year. They have beautiful flowers that bloom for just a week or two. The downside of perennials is that the beds need to be weeded. I prefer perennials over annuals. Annuals give color all...
