Lowering Cholesterol Through Diet and Exercise

Have you ever tried lowering your cholesterol through diet and exercise? Is it possible? Perhaps it isn't something that you have struggled with, but I know for myself when I lost weight, increased my muscle mass and started eating right I was able to lower some of my high cholesterol numbers. Remaining vigilant is more difficult some times than others. Finding ways to keep lowering cholesterol through diet and exercise (and trying to stay off statins) is one of my health and fitness goals. Cholesterol numbers are linked to determining your risk of developing heart disease or experiencing a cardiovascular event. My high cholesterol is probably herditary, but I know if I am pretty strict with my certain foods (limiting butter, egg yokes, shellfish and red meat)...

Tracking Food with Cronometer

I wrote about tracking food in the very early days of the Becoming Elli website. I wrote a blogpost entitled Counting Calories or Eat Less and Move More.  At that time, I was using SparkPeople for tracking my food. I stuck with that app because I had a large body of data in it. I had created recipes and lots of favorites. It was easy to use. Five years later, I'm now tracking food with Cronometer. Unfortunately, SparkPeople closed its doors for food logging. It changed its focus and no longer provided a free tool for tracking food. Within the past year, I tried logging food on the Fitbit app. It was ok but I definitely prefer tracking food with Cronometer. Some of the reasons why I prefer...

Healthy Eating at the Hotel for the Podcast Conference

During the recent conference I was eating at restaurants in the hotel for 5 days. How did I keep up with healthy eating choices? Healthy eating at the hotel this week has been a challenge! This past week Jill and I attended a giant podcasters' conference in Denver where we learned from the best in the industry. The conference was held at the Gaylord Rockies, a HUGE hotel with 7 different restaurants & bars with hundreds of hotel rooms.Located in the prairie outside of Aurora, it is a ten minute Uber ride from the Denver Airport and far away from any other restaurants. We were pretty much limited to the food that we could buy in the hotel and a few excursions off the hotel grounds. I realized...

Some of the topics we discussed include: Eating fiber first, then protein, then carbs. So eating your salad or vegetables first makes sense, then the protein, and then whatever carbs you’re eating. [caption id="attachment_6231" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Glucose Revolution by Jessie Inchauspe[/caption] Jill recently read the book "Glucose Revolution by Jessie Inchauspe" and we talked about some insights that she learned from it. Water? Before after during? Drinking water before a meal might help you eat less. I’ve read that drinking during or after a meal does...

Free Range Eggs – What Does That Actually Mean?

Some of you may know that my husband and I keep chickens. They've been known to make a vocal appearance from time to time in the Fit Strong Women Over 50 podcast. They like to announce when they have just laid an egg - at least that is what I think they are saying! I love the idea of farm fresh free range eggs. What does that mean exactly? At our house, free range eggs means that the chicken run free, at least some of the time. I will say, it is safer for chickens to stay in a pen. Ours are always penned in at night! When they are locked inside the pen, no hawks, owls, possums, raccoons, dogs and other predators are going to get them. There...

Healthy Snacks

Chris and I have decreed Monday to be recipe day in the Becoming Elli world. Why? Who knows but we like it. Rather than give you a recipe today, I’m going to list some snacks that I enjoy, just to give you some fresh ideas.  I try to include protein with my carbs in my healthy snacks. Some fat is usually a good idea too. Here are some healthy snacks that I enjoy: Hummus with sugar snap peas. You can use any vegetable or combination of vegetables you want but I love a snack of sugar snap peas with hummus. Fantastic! A handful of nuts. This works but if you’re too hungry, it’s easy to eat more nuts than you probably want to eat in one...
